The U.S. Coast Guard failed to protect a sexual assault survivor. Two years ago, a member of the Coast Guard forcibly raped a civilian woman in New Jersey. The predator had already lied to her about his station, telling her he was stationed in Cape May when he was actually in New York. The woman was fearful and embarrassed about going public with the situation.
The woman did not receive a response from the recorded interview regarding the status of her case. She went into great detail about the night of the assault, leaving no stone unturned. The incident had a profound impact on her, affecting her career and personal well-being. She developed PTSD, a mental health condition that can have a wide range of effects on individuals.
She shared her story exclusively with a member of the Advocacy Organization “The Pettiest Officer of the U.S. Coast Guard” on Facebook. After he posted about her situation, the increased traffic prompted the organization to investigate and reopen her case. However, they later closed it. We appreciate this organization using its platform to bring attention to this survivor’s story.
The woman attempted to contact the Coast Guard again for an update, only to be informed that the perpetrator had been transferred to a different state and promoted. The prosecutor later dropped the case without informing her. This was a life-changing event for the woman, and she wants to use her story to protect survivors instead of their perpetrators. She believes that things need to change to ensure that such incidents do not happen to others.
